The Canadian National Railways Historical Association (CNRHA; formerly the CN Lines SIG), in co-operation with the Canada Science and Technology Museum, is proud to announce the publication of this long-anticipated project. Volume 1 will be published in December 2011 and Volume 2 will follow in December 2012.
Authoritative and engaging text by Ken Goslett, Kevin J. Holland, Glenn Courtney and a team of contributing authors is based on years of archival research and presents the definitive story of Canadian National's transition from steam to diesel, and the eight- decade evolution of the railway's vast diesel fleet.
Learn how CNR management of the 1920s led the railway industry in embracing internal-combustion locomotives, how the first major steps toward full dieselization were taken in the late 1940s, and why the process took more than a decade to complete on Canadian National and its Grand Trunk, Central Vermont, Grand Trunk Western, and Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific components.
Accompanying the behind-the-scenes story of CNR dieselization, summaries of individual locomotive types provide information and photographs of particular interest to modellers.
Comprehensive photographic coverage includes images from the railway's and builders' files, as well as the work of some of North America's most renowned photographers. Roster-type views are augmented by trackside scenes that illustrate the geographic and operational challenges facing the railway's locomotives and crews from coast to coast.
