In this group there are very few models that are not in the ( Stand-in ) category for various reasons. As you will see through this listing there are not many painted models listed, this is due to the need to change many of the details on the kits or they are craftsman undecorated kits. If you are happy with the base model and can find it factory painted go for it. There are details on all these models to look for like the placement of the head lights, as most CN are low mounted, use of dynamic brakes, body width not to scale, Canadian comfort cabs, hand rails, steam generators, louvers and access doors, etc. Right now I don't have the time to write up a modeling guide for each type of engine, but I will refer you to written articles that apply to certain engines. For any project you will need photos of the engine you intend to model as there are differences between many units in a series. The book Rail Canada V1 and Rail America V1 are a very good source of information on painting and some detail information. If you see that they are a stand-in then you know that general type was used on the CNR at least. This has been a very difficult group to deal with for the above mentioned reasons so bear with me. If you have anything to add or a question about a model please send me an E-mail. This will be the only way to improve the sight and make it better for the future.

P Athearn HO 3301 U A PA1 You can model the two units that CN demonstrated. There are pictures of these units in Rail Canada volume 1 and an article in Canadian Railway Modeler 8/6 by William Mitchell on modeling these units. Note that there is a decal set from Accu-cals with the Alco front herald.
P Athearn HO 3139 U S F7A No F7 on CN had dual head lights, steam generators, roof overhang on the rear With the 36 dynamic brake fan you can model A units 9056-9086 even #s. By removing the dynamic brake fan you model A units 9028-9054 even #s. By changing the 36 dynamic brake to a 48 you model numbers 9088-9142 even #s. Note also the front window is not to scale and the rear window should be round.
P Athearn HO 3224 U S F7B No F7 on CN steam generators or roof overhang on the rear With the 36 dynamic brake fan you can model B units 9057-9085 odd #s. By removing the dynamic brake fan you model B units 9029-9055 odd #s. The window in the rear door should also be round , not square.
P Athearn HO 4930 U S C44-9 There is a three part article by Reg Neale on modeling this engine in Canadian Railway Modeler 7/5, 7/6 and 8/1 and the same article is in Rail Model Journal 7/99 and yet another article by Bob Boudreau in Model Railroading 12/97. This model does have the wrong cab which needs to be changed along with some other details.
P Athearn HO 3151 U S GP7 Note that this body is not to scale width and you should have proto type pictures as there are many differences between many of the CN units.
P Athearn HO 4612 U S GP38-2 Without dynamic brake as none of the CN units had these. You can model the conventional cab, and can do widenose version as well by changing to Canadian cab. There is an article in RMC 11/2000 by John Eull with information and detailing tips that are suitable for HO. There is an N scale article using a Kato GP38-2. Also there is an article by Reg Neale on modeling an GP38-2W using Jay's Train Parts in Railmodel Journal 11/2000.
P Athearn HO 4200 U S GP35 With dynamic brake. The body of this engine is not to scale being to wide. Note there where only 2 of these units on the CN roster - 4000 and 4001, later 9300 and 9301.
P Athearn HO 4700 U S GP40-2 With dynamic brake. This model lacks the CN widenose cab which needs to be added. Modeling a CN GP40-2 is covered in MR How To Detail Diesel Locomotives.
P Athearn HO 4701 U S GP40-2 Without dynamic brake. This model lacks the CN widenose cab. Modeling a CN GP40-2 is covered in MR How To Detail Diesel Locomotives and Tony Horvatin did a detailed article in the April 1996 issue of Railmodel Journal on the modelling of CN #9607, based on the Athearn model.
P Athearn HO 4812 U S SD40-2 ( NEW) These are snoot nose engines with corrigrated grills and Q fans used to model rebuilt CN SD40-2's # 6000-6019. These units have a dynamic brake.
P Athearn HO 6300 U S SD40-2 ( NEW) This can be used to model CN SD40-2's with dynamic brakes, chicken wire grills and conventional cabs #5241-5314
P Athearn HO 6500 U S SD40-2 ( NEW) This can be used to model CN SD40-2's with dynamic brakes, corrigated grills and conventional cabs #55324-5363
P Athearn HO 4400 U S SD40-2 With dynamic brakes can be used for the units that CN purchased with conventional cabs. Otherwise the cabs have to be changed. There is a very good article by Jay Rotsch in MRC 12/91 on modeling these units for CN. There will be an article on SD40-2s in CN Lines 10/4. NOTE these will be dicontinued when sold out.
P Athearn HO 4409 U S SD40-2 Without dynamic brakes . There is a very good article by Jay Rotsch in MRC 12/91 on modeling these units for CN. There will be an article on SD40-2s in CN Lines 10/4. NOTE these will be dicontinued when sold out.
P Athearn HO U S SD70I These are very close to being accurate, there is an article by Reg Neale in 6/2000 Rail Model Journal on detailing this engine.
P Athearn HO U S SD75I These are very close to being accurate, there is an article by Reg Neale in 6/2000 Rail Model Journal on detailing this engine.
P Athearn HO 4300 U S HR 24-66 There is an article in CN Lines 5/4 by Mike Christian and Al Lill on this engine and modeling it. Note there was only one of these units on the CN roster.
P Athearn HO 3900 U S SW7 CN never had an SW7 but there is a large article on how to convert it to a SW1200 in CN Lines 1/1 and another in Railmodel Journal 10/97. It would now be much easier to just use a Proto 2000 SW1200 but the info is there if you wish.
P Atlas HO U S S2 Not much work needed to model a CN S2. The cab side windows are too high and the door on the fireman's side runs only halfway up the cab. In the 1960s CN S-2s received hood mounted bells and cab sunshades, otherwise the units were pretty much stock during the 1940s and 1950s.
P Atlas HO U A S3
P Atlas HO U A S4 The S-4 would be suitable for modeling units built prior to 1955. In the 1960s early S-4s received hood mounted bells and cab sunshades, otherwise the units were pretty much stock during the 1940s and 1950s.
P Atlas HO U S RS3 If you don't want to modify the hood doors, you can model an early CN RS3 with louvres. Units 7830-7847 were delivered with louvered doors. They were later renumbered 1800-1817 and then 3000-3017. Some units later received hoods with filter openings in the doors. You defenetly need photos as there are many variations of CN RS3s.
P Atlas HO U S GP40 You will need to lower the front light and change some other details.
P Atlas HO U S C424
P Atlas HO U S RS11 RS11 as stand-in for RS18 - the Kato-powered unit is a scale 1 foot too short in the truck centres. The new version corrected that and they are no longer powered by Kato. To model a CN RS18 it needs corner hood notches filled in, use Min By Eric part C2, new number boards N7, Antenna A1, Sand Hatches H31 and bell B20, also Min By Eric. Minor problem is the large shutters have the actuator box detail which is incorrect for Canadian Alcos, though it is very small and hard to remove. Use Tiger Valley decals to simulate paper filters in hood.
P Bachman ( Spectrum ) HO 81201 U A FM 16-44 There is an article Canadian Railway Modeler Aug./ Sept. 94 by Bob Boudreau on modeling these but using the Bowser shell.
P Bachman ( Spectrum ) HO 80001 U S 44 Ton
P Bachman ( Spectrum ) HO 81101 U S 70 Ton There is an article by Mike Barone in CRM Aug/Sept 95 on modeling a 70 Tonner.
P Bachman ( Spectrum ) HO U S GP35 There does not seem to be an undec version of this model so one would have to strip one
Bowser HO 113000 U S FM 16-44 There is an article in Canadian Railway Modeler in 94 by Bob Boudreau on modeling these using this shell.
M Cary Loco Works HO 52 U S S2/4 No rivet detail on the body. Possible starting point for a late model S4 or an S7. The hood is not to scale, as it is wider to accomodate the old Athearn Jet 600 motor on the SW7 chassis.
M Cary Loco Works HO 53 U S FM 12-44 A possible starting point for modeling a 1630-1639 series H-12-44.

P Stewart Hobbies HO 5200 U S F3A/B set This set comes with a single headlight / low fans / and the chicken wire grills in the correct places on the side. This model does come with the dynamic brake vents molded onto the roof as two little rectangles with molded on ( in ) chicken wire.....CN's F- 3s did not have this feature, so this detail should be removed. The detailing comments above apply to these B units as well. I should also mention that these had their external appearance changed considerably over their lifetimes....you definitely need photos for accurate modeling.
P Stewart Hobbies HO U S F3B
P Stewart Hobbies HO 5600 U S F7A/B set This set comes with a single head light. 36 dynamic fan, horizontal louvers on the side, and a roof overhang at the flat ends....this feature should be removed on F-7s. The Canadian built F-7s should have the end door(s) window as a round portal and not the square one as depicted on the model....this is easily modeled by shaving off the cast on square window frame, and installing a thin plate of .005 styrene with the portal either punched or drilled the same diameter as the square window is wide. The dynamic brake may need to be either removed altogether or replaced with a 48 one depending on which units you are modeling. Most if not all F7's had a small winter hatch.
