In July of 1990 a friend and I railfanned across much of Western Ontario, Manitoba and Eastern Saskatchewan where we were lucky enough to encounter GMD1 locomotives, both 4 axle and 6 axle. I photographed 1400 and 1409 working in the Melville, Saskatchewan yard. I chose to scratchbuild the rebuilt 4 axle yard units as it was much easier to model the trucks using Athearn SW-1500s as a starting point. The Athearn frame was lengthened and the larger fuel tanks were built out of sheet styrene and detail parts. The shells were scratchbuilt using Cannon & CO doors and sheet styrene for the frame, body and cab. Various details were added to the shell and Microscale decals were applied to complete the units. I photographed 1400 and 1409 working in the Melville, Saskatchewan yard.
