CN ALCo/MLW locomotives
Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) was founded in 1902 and was owned by the American Locomotive Company (ALCo). In the mid 1940s MLW was a well known builder of steam locomotives but as railroads began to switch from steam to diesel power the company followed the trend.
In 1949 MLW began to build ALCo locomotives under licence. Initially the diesels were very similar in appearance to the American built locomotives with the louvres in the upper part of the engine access doors and the air-filters inside the carbody. Soon though these were superseded by the characteristic exterior square car body filters. MLW also redesigned the road switcher carbody and the angular recessed number boards of the American locomotives were replaced by flat number boards on front and rear as seen on the Canadian-built RS10s and RS18s.
In the late '60s after ALCo had been purchased by the Worthington Corporation, MLW became MLW-Worthington. In 1969 they purchased the engineering designs and world licences for the ALCo products.
In 1975 Bombardier purchased the majority interest in MLW- Worthington. In addition to designing the LRC passenger train (Light, rapid and comfortable) powered by 3,750 hp locomotives, they introduced an updated series of freight locomotives called the Highly Reliable (HR) series. In the model number the first digit (4 or 6) designates the number of axles on the locomotive and the second and third digits the number of cylinders in the engine. This gives the models HR412 and HR616 and these used similar engines to those in earlier models. The HR412 carbody was similar to that of the M420 but the HR616 had a new full width carbody and newly designed controls featuring many lighted rotary switches.
These HR locomotives were only purchased by CN and were scrapped or sold at about the same time as the M420s and C630M/M636s that they were designed to replace.
Finally Bombardier discontinued locomotive manufacture in Canada although they still own a global manufacturing business for rail-transportation. In 1988 they sold the Montreal works to General Electric(Canada) who briefly used them to rebuild locomotives into the Super 7 series. GE closed the MLW plant at the end of 1993.
CN MLW locomotives fall into four groups:
- switchers — photos, descriptions, paint schemes, history
- road switchers — photos, descriptions, paint schemes, history
- freight locomotives
- passenger locomotives

- in January 1998, lifted off the rails by crane in Boucherville QC and driven on roadway under its own power about 1000 feet to the city hall where it was used to produce power during the blackout caused by the ice storm. Locomotive cut grooves into the pavement with the flanges on its wheels; it suffered a damaged gear case in the process. CN 3508 also took to the road. See also 3555 which was similarly employed.

- Like its sister CN 3502, 3508 was lifted off the rails in Jaunaury 1998 and moved on its own power on the main street of Boucherville QC. It was supposed to provide power during the blackout that followed the ice storm. It was in fact never used in this manner and just sat on the street for a while. It suffered a damaged gear case in the move.
